Woke at Night is a short film that features two articulate, intelligent, and opinionated individuals explore moments of tenderness and confusion over their budding relationship. The film explores themes of love and fate in the age of algorithms.

Writer / Director Ben Majest needed Art + Design support throughout the production of his short film, “Woke At Night”. Preproduction work included storyboarding, prop creation, and art assistance. I worked with the director to understand the visual language of the film, and design a cohesive identity that could be used in the film titles and promotional materials.

Solution

I created a storyboard Animatic — This initial storyboard helped align members of the production of the directoral style and narrative the production hoped to achieve and helped guide discussions of how best to proceed. Worked with the art department to make a faux Harvard University diploma for the lead character. The printout was printed to scale, treated in a coffee staining process to add texture, and framed. Animation test for opening credits. — The design of the credits was inspired by the chiaroscuro lighting of the film. Golden hues boldly appearing in a light sweep and then softly receding into a black palette evokes the personal, pensive tone of the story.
